I've been meaning to set up a Livejournal for some time. I've never been good at diaries so I'll probably keep general musings to a minimum.
Raison d'être
No, this Livejournal is for a purpose. One of my aims in 2006 is to live a more sustainable lifestyle. I already prefer to walk rather than drive and try not to waste things, but I want to go further. I'm planning to record my path towards this in a way that this Livejournal might be a useful reference for anyone else wanting ideas to do the same.
I also want to use this as a forum to explore political ideas (not only environmental in nature). I'd be delighted for anyone to respond, whatever your views. The intention is that all my thoughts that I post will be formative. U-turns are fine and to be expected (especially from me). Don't be surprised if I 'talk to myself' on this journal if my thoughts develop - the overriding objective is to get to the right answer, or at least a better understanding of the issues. I'm afraid the nature of a Livejournal is that I'll be setting the agenda for debate based on what interests me, although feel free to e-mail me to draw my attention to any discussion on your own Livejournal that you'd like me to read and consider responding to.
I have recently become a (fairly active) member of the local Green Party. I support and feel comfortable with the party's core values, but confess I don't agree with every single one of the agreed (national) policies. However, I am never going to find the perfect political fit so rather than do nothing, I would prefer to compromise and get out with like-minded people to do something to try to engage people with the way the world (and their local community) is run. I guess all parties are broad churches and I look forward to contributing to policy discussions from within. I would add that I am also keen on ethical politics and believe that one doesn't necessarily need to win power to achieve change.
This is an initial introduction to this Livejournal and I expect I will refine it over the next few weeks.
Friends policy
I've seen some people add a friends policy. I'm not quite sure how it works yet, but I intend to define a 'friend' for this purpose as someone whose journal I want to bookmark. I am not currently intending this to be a social journal so am not going to add someone as a friend simply because I know them. If you are a 'friend' it doesn't necessarily mean I like you and if you are not it doesn't mean I don't. There is a limit on the time I wish to spend on the computer so I'm going to be highly selective. The decision whether to add someone as a 'friend' will be based largely on how informative and thought-provoking I find their writings (and what they tend to write about). I intend that some of the people I add will hold views radically at odds with my own. Anyway, if you're interested in reading this journal, please add me as a friend. It's the best way of drawing my attention to your journal too as I will periodically browse those who have added me.
I do not plan that there will be any filtered posts to this journal so there is no advantage in being listed as a 'friend'.
